Finally, the weekend is here! As we all prepare for the weekend, here is a compilation of today’s amazing edition of the Big 5 daily.
We have news that, Careem, a major ride-hailing company in the Middle East and African region, have launched a free in-ride insurance programme for both passengers and Captains in all 15 countries of its operation. The firm aims to pay up to $20,000 to cover expenses related to death or serious injury caused by accidents during a Careem ride. This is effective from the moment the app is online and available through the trip to pick-up the passenger until the passengers get to their destination. Amazing stuff!
There is also news that, Angolan mobile network operator, ‘UNITEL’ has now partnered with the World Economics Forum’s (WEF) exclusive network of Partner level companies. This makes it the first African company from the Southern region to do so. This partnership will allow UNITEL support WEF in Africa and be represented in the 2020 Davos Annual Meeting, Annual Meeting of the New Champions in China and the Regional Summits in Africa and also, in the Middle East.
Next on the Big 5, DotConnectAfrica Academy led Initiative ‘Miss.Africa’, has announced a $5000 Seed Fund in Africa- to support women and girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 2019 Seed Grant will enable them launch or expand their own initiatives and will increase their digital opportunities in IT related training, jobs and leadership roles. The sum of $1000 will be granted to two applicants from any African country that will create tech related socio-economic solutions for women. Moving on, AfriLabs is set to hold the fourth edition of its AfriLabs Annual Gathering. Set for the 28th-30th of October 2019, the AfriLab annual Gathering will be holding in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The pan African Tech innovation hub network announced the date last week.
The 4th edition of the AfriLabs Annual Gathering will be co-hosted by AfriLabs hub members; Tech Village, xHub and Iceaddis as a main support hub in Ethiopia. The theme of the event is ‘Connect: Towards an Integrated Innovation Ecosystem’.
Finally, on the Big 5 Daily, Sierra Leone Leone’s mobile learning platform for financial inclusion, Mosabi and Kenyan parenting website, Mums Village have been selected for Gray Matter Capital’s (GMC) Calibrator program. They will join seven other startups from India and Vietnam in the second round of the India-based edtech accelerator program. Launched last year, the GMC Accelerator Program aims to make the mobile phone a device to promote “Self-Learning to Earning”
