Twitter has recently announced their intention to discontinue their services on Periscope application by March 2021but will continue offering live video streaming using the Twitter Live feature on the main Twitter app.

Five years after their acquisition by Twitter, there has been a noticeable decline in the subscribers and users of Periscope, that has resulted in increased maintenance cost with no commensurate return on value.

New users are currently unable to open accounts on the app and the latest software updates on the app disable new account signups.

While existing users have the next few months to download and archive their media content on the app before it is totally shut down.

According to Twitter on a blog post, “Although it’s time to say goodbye, the legacy of Periscope will live on far beyond the boundaries of the app itself.

The capabilities and ethos of the Periscope team and infrastructure already permeate Twitter, and we’re confident that live video still has the potential of seeing an even wider audience within the Twitter product.”
