Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) has launched its mobile money service – SMEGA. The mobile money service was developed using the Comviva’s mobiquity money platform which allows users to carry out financial transactions. It allows users to purchase airtime, data, water bills, pre-paid electricity, salaries and more from anywhere around the world.
Customers in Botswana will be able to use SMEGA to send money to both SMEGA users and non-registered customers via a passcode. Businesses can also use SMEGA to make bulk payments like allowances and employee salary. This will reduce the cost of processing multiple cash transactions. SMEGA comes with a unique feature called Motshelo Club for a group of people to contribute to a single savings wallet. This happens to be the first mobile operator to offer digital group savings in Botswana.

The Chief Commercial Officer at Botswana Telecommunications Corporation, Edward Wicks said that they aim to improve access to financial services across the country. The mobile money service will improve people’s lives and contribute to the general economic development by offering a more convenient, fast and easy means to transfer money and process payments.
Comviva ‘s mobiquity money platform enables service providers to provide digital financial services to consumers around the world. With the mobile phone, the transaction will be easily processed.
