Careem, a major ride-hailing company in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), has acquired Cyacle to offer micro-mobility services. Careem seeks to provide alternative means of transportation and improve mobility services in this region.
The micro-mobility industry in the MENA is gradually developing. Cyacle is one of the popular and fully automated docked bike-share services in the region. Launched in 2014, the stations run for 24 hours daily via a mobile app. Members are issued passwords to access the docking system to ensure the security of the app users.

Speaking about the acquisition, the Co-founder, Magnus Olsson said they seek to increase the availability of bicycles and expand existing routes, to improve micro-mobility services in the region. The Careem bike app will be available for IOS and Android users to download; it will soon be absorbed into the Careem app. The bikes are majorly for short distance trips, to and from bus stations, workouts, and family recreational activities.
In December 2018, Careem launched a bus sharing service in Egypt, dubbed ‘Careem BUS’. The bus service is also available in Saudi Arabia. The acquisition of Cyacle shows that the company is committed to leveraging technology to solve transportation issues and create more jobs by providing safer means of transportation in the MENA.
