Ethiopia has finalized all preparations to undergo the first ever digitized national population and housing census. This will kick off during their forthcoming National Population and Housing Census scheduled for April 7-28. According to the CSA, the country is embracing Chinese technologies as they have purchased 180,000 tablets from Huawei and Lenovo.
The products have been tested and approved by the agency. Mobile tablets will be used for data collection through five major local Ethiopian languages. Biratu Yigezu Director General of CSA said the last census was challenging as it was conducted on paper.

“The new technology is crucial to report and register the actual data straight to the system without any loss of facts in the process and it reduces time,” he said
The new technology will enable careful data registration system, which will eradicate duplication and double counting during the data collection and registration procedure, according to experts at the CSA.
The census was initially scheduled to take place in November 2017, but was postponed due to factors that are mainly attributed to security problems that were rampant across the country from the second half of 2016. The census will be conducted using five local languages; Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Afar, Tigrigna, and Somali.
