Google has announced the launch of its 2020 Google for Startup Accelerator program in a blog post. This time, the accelerator is focused on startups with innovative ideas for sustainable development and climate challenges.

The announcement follows the submission of a petition signed by 1137 employees and address to Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s CFO. The petition urged the company to meet several sustainability-related matters, including ending partnerships and funding for partners. The new accelerator is focused on creating a sustainable environment, according to the United Nation’s SDGs.

The program is open to startups from across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Startups will be selected based on solutions for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals of poverty, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, inequality, peace and justice.

About eight to ten startups will be selected in the next few weeks to take part in a six-month accelerator program that will be held in early 2020. A second cohort will be selected before the end of the year.

Google for Startup Accelerator is designed to address the unique challenges encountered when building a social impact company. These include insufficient product and expertise, business development, and access to funding
