Jumia Announces 58% Gross Merchandise Volume Growth amidst Fraud Allegations, Caselines Brings Digital Judicial Evidence Management Software to South Africa and More

Jumia has announced its 2019 first-quarter report, despite accusations from Citron. They announced a 58% growth leading to 102% growth in marketplace revenue. Their gross profit margin as a percentage of GMV increased from 5.6% in Q1 of 2018 to 6.5% in Q1 of 2019. They are yet to disclaim the Citron Research report. Who knows why?

MTN Nigeria also released its first quarter result. Their revenue has increased by 13.4% year-on-year. Their customer base also grew by 2.1 million, leading to a total of 60.3 million subscribers amongst others. The CEO of MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman, said that the growth was built on their focus on customer-base services.

 The judicial system is not left out from the wave of technological innovation. The Office of the Chief Justice of South Africa has introduced the Caselines Software into the country’s litigation system. The cloud-based platform will help lawyers create cost-effective pre-trials, video conferences for virtual hearings and to file cases.

Good news! Microsoft will finally launch $100 million African Development centers in Kenya and Nigeria. It reported that it was opening an AI research unit in Lagos and Nairobi. The $100 million will be spent in the next 5 years to build the development centers in partnership with local partners and governments. The first 100 developers will be hired for both the Kenya and Nigeria projects at the end of 2019.

Vodacom Group has secured a major stake in the South African IoT firm, IoT.nxt. The acquisition of the new company will help Vodacom boost their IoT business units across all outfits. They have appointed William Mzimba, the Business Chief Officer to lead IoT.nxt’s management team.
