A while back, Malenga Mulendema, a writer from Lusaka Zambia submitted an animation project called “Mama K Super 4” to Triggerfish Story Lab competition script. She wrote this script to create superheroes of African descent: “I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero”.
The project was selected and she joined others in a development training course by Triggerfish Story Lab. Little did she know that this seemingly small script will turn out to be an inspiration to African animators. In 2015, Malenga emerged one of the 8th winners of the Story Lab Initiative of Triggerfish in partnership with Walt Disney and South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry.
Netflix, a leading entertainment service with over 139 million subscribers in more than 190 countries, has picked her project to be the first African series to be aired on its platform. This announcement was made by Melissa Cobb, Vice President, Original Animation at Streamer.
The MKS4 is a story of four teenage girls from Lusaka who got recruited by a retired secret agent to save the world on a low budget. The project was co-produced by Triggerfish Animation Studios and London-based CAKE. Triggerfish other productions include Adventures in Zambezia, Khumba, Stick Man and Revolting Rhymes.

Netflix is collaborating with Triggerfish Animation studio and CAKE to launch a continent-wide search for local female writers to develop contents for the episodes of Mama K Super 4 TV series.
