inDriver, one of the top ride-hailing apps in the world, has launched in Johannesburg after a successful launch in Cape Town last month. The Russian ride-hailing company debut in Africa with a launch in Tanzania last year. They currently boast of 22 million users in 200 cities across 19 countries. Last year, they recorded a 10 million app download from the Google Play Store.

How it Works

Their unique Real Time Deal (RTD) model, which allows passengers to determine the rates for trips, sets them apart from competitors. The rider enters the amount he/she wants to pay for a trip and the first driver who is willing to accept the offer confirms the trip. At the end of the trip, the rider then pays directly to the drivers, either with cash or mobile transfers. Another differentiator is that inDriver charges drivers on a flat rate between 5% – 8%, rather than a percentage of the fare receipts. Drivers are able to view both pick-up and destination points before accepting rides.

After the launch in Cape Town, they have successfully registered 3,000 drivers in Johannesburg and plans to expand across other African cities. For those who think of setting ridiculous prices for trips, there is a minimum price set for routes. The driver can choose to either accept bargain or decline a ride.

The launch of inDriver app in Africa will serve as major competition for the likes of Taxify and Uber when successfully launched across other major cities. The app is available for download on both Google Play Store and the App Store.
