Telco Operators in Ghana Barred from Expiring Voice & Data Bundles

The Ghanaian Ministry of communications has barred telecommunication operators in the country from expiring both voice and data bundle purchased by customers. This is to ensure that customers get the right value for their money. 

Africa is among the top continents that use a lot of data. The continent was estimated to have over 525,148,631 internet users as of June 2019. A report by Internetworldstats.com also revealed that Ghana had 11, 737,818 million internet users this year. 

Amidst this high internet usage, Telco companies like Vodaphone, MTN, Globacom still expire mobile data bundles purchased by users.

This action not only hinders users from effectively maximizing the purchased data but also erroneously enriches the Telco at the expense of customers. This was the major issue that spurred the directive of the Ghana Ministry of Communication. 

The ministry also instructed the Telcos to cease the instant deduction of the Communication Service Tax ( CST) from airtime purchased by customers following customers’ complaint. 

Ghana’s Communication Minister, Ursual Owusu-Ekuful, however, reassured Ghanian of the state’s ability to make the right decision that will favor citizens. 

He noted that the new directive will be strictly in compliance with the existing Quality of Service (QoS) standard available in the country which ensures network subscribers get value for their money. 

Currently, only AirtelTigo allows users to get the best of their bundles without expiration.
