Truecaller Report blames Telecom Operators for 85% Spam Calls & SMS in Nigeria

Trucaller’s recent report has blamed telecom operators for 85% spam calls and SMS in the country.

The report revealed that Nigerians receive up to 30 spam messages and 8.4 spam calls in a month. This figure is higher than the figures from 2018.

According to the report, telecom operators leverage subscriber’s information to spam users with promotions.

While telcos’ accounted for 85% of spam, telemarketing accounted for 3%, Robo-calls, and financial service providers, etc. accounted for 12%.

The last time Nigeria appeared on the spam list was in 2017. The report revealed that telco operators spam rise from 61% to 85% was responsible for placing Nigeria on the list.

Nigeria placed 18th for spam calls and 7th for spam SMS. South Africa and Egypt ranked 6th and 20th respectively on the list.

The massive penetration of mobile phones in Nigeria comes with a side effect ‘Spam’. In a bid to cut off spam, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has created a Do-Not-Disturb Code (2442). The code allows users to deactivate unsolicited messages.

Truecallers report also revealed that spam grew by 18% globally, with nine African countries on the most ranked list.
