LOOK OUT FOR THIS EGYPTIAN START-UP IN 2017

A BUSINESS CONTRIBUTING TO EDUCATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (MENA)

Tutorama is an Egyptian ed-tech start-up to look out for. The company was founded just last year January but spent most of the year in Cairo being tested within the closed confines of an existing test preparation business. Later on in the year, Tutorama took away the first place in the MIT Enterprise Forum Startup Competition.

How does Tutorama work? It is a platform that connects parents with top quality local tutors for their children who are in their area. Parents are able to schedule and pay for sessions online. The child’s progress can also be monitored online through the platform. Already, the Egyptian start-up has been mentioned as a start-up to look out for in 2017 by Disrupt Africa.

Right after its first win in April of last year, Tutorama went on to compete in a global startup pitching contest, Seedstars World, and won the national competition. The application is set to represent the nation of Egypt at the global finals in Switzerland later this year.

The business gets funding from a commission it charges on each session booked through the Tutorama platform but, it is also working getting seed funding from investors at a value of around USD 1 to 1.5 million. Its co-founders Mohamed Khodeir and Omar Khashaba would like to expand their business model to cities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
