S.A Startup, Flexclub Raises $1.2 million in Investment, Kulala Airlines Launches New App for Android and iOS and More

Big news! South African startup FlexClub, which links drivers and investors to cars for ride-hailing services, closed a $1.2million investment in a seed round led by CRE Venture Capital. Nairobi based Savannah Fund and South African angel investor, Michael Jordan joined CRE in the $1.2 million round. The company intends to use the finance to add team members and expand off the continent through a partnership with Uber Mexico.

Moving on, South African Airline, Kulala.com has launched a new mobile app for both Android and iPhone users. The app was developed for Kulula in partnership with Nacelle and Infinea Software Labs. The new app will provide users with flight information, seat selection, booking management, weather forecast at their destination, upcoming trips, and more. It offers users a quicker access to the kulula.com website and simplifies the entire customer experience.

There is also news that, Itanna, an Accelerator Program sponsored by Honeywell has called for submission from all tech-enabled startups. The program commenced in 2018 with 2019 as the second edition. The company is looking forward to receiving hundreds of applications from tech-enabled start-ups across Africa. Itanna aims to increase the number of cohort companies to 10 and the investment amount to $30,000. It will also run from June 2019 to September 2019 and will culminate in a demo day where the cohort will pitch their start-ups to investors. Applications are open from 18 March 2019 to 19 April 2019. Next on the Big 5 Daily, Access UK, a new online visa application platform has launched in South Africa. This platform will allow customers to book their visa application appointment, scan and upload their documents all from the comforts of their home. Access UK will grant customers access to continuous updates of their application till the day of their appointment.

Finally on the Big 5 Daily, 12 tech startups have been selected to form the third cohort of the Google Launchpad Africa accelerator, which assists startups to exploit Google’s technologies to scale their businesses. The names of the startups selected for the accelerator programs in Africa, Brazil and India were revealed in a blog post by Google Developers earlier this month. Applications for the Launchpad Accelerator Africa 3 cohort closed on 13 January.
