WorldCover Raises $6 million Fund to Provide Insurance for Smallholder Farmers, Call for Application: Nokia Open Innovation Challenge 2019 and More

Big news! WorldCover has raised a sum of $6 million Series A fund. They intend to use the fund to help smallholder farmers in emerging countries in Africa by updating their app to include advice to smallholder farmers in addition to the insurance offering. The crop insurance program provides access to credit facilities for farmers and family members.

Moving on, Instagram announced on the 2nd of May 2019, that the Instagram checkout feature will now be available for influencers from next week. This means that Influencers, artists and celebrities can tag any piece of clothing that they are wearing so followers can buy that item without ever leaving the Instagram app. Instagram also announced that they have released a new beta feature for testing. The new feature hides the amount of likes on a post from the poster’s followers. They say it is part of their goal to make social media a less ‘pressurized environment’.

The platform uses artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to translate over 2000 African languages. The app however, has not been launched. But we are excited… as you should be.

Finally, the 2019 edition of the Nokia Open Innovation Challenge has official opened for companies and innovators to submit. Interested applicants will have an opportunity to propose automation related products and solutions to a panel of international judges. The most advanced and innovative candidates will be selected to attend the final event at the Nokia headquarters, Finland in November. The sum of $175 000 will be up for grabs for winners.
