South Africa’s Vodacom and Kenya’s Safaricom have formed a joint venture in a bid to buy out the brand and intellectual property rights of M-Pesa (East Africa’s biggest payment platform) from Vodafone. They plan to pay the sum of €12 million for the purchase. This purchase will stop Vodacom and Safaricom’s annual royalty remittance to Vodafone and also open up opportunities for expansion.

The retired footballer, Didier Drogba has signed an MoU for digital literacy project in Africa. He signed the MoU on behalf of his foundation the Didier Drogba Foundation (FDD) with Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA); and the Ministry of National Education, Technical and Vocational Training (MENETFP). The Didier Drogba Foundation will leverage MoU to educate civil society organizations, citizens and development partners on the importance of digital literacy in their everyday activities.

An African Fintech platform ‘Wari’ has integrated its payment solutions on WhatsApp. Through the partnership, their customers will be able to initiate financial operations such as – account opening, airtime recharge, money transfers, and bill payments. Customers can access the mentioned services in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese languages.

Aerobotics, a South African based startup that leverages technology to identify crop diseases, has emerged winner of the Africa Tech Award that took place in Paris. They received President Emmanuel Macron’s Tech award and an invitation to attend the AfricArena Conference in Cape Town.

Mastercard and Samsung partnered to create a secure digital identity platform. They will leverage the platform to integrate all passwords and login details in a single identity and in return protect their user’s personal information on mobile devices.
