WiSolar, a South African and Nigerian-based solar-as-a-service company is set to launch its prepaid decentralized solar products across Africa. The company is looking to roll out its solutions for mass adoption across communities in Nigeria and South Africa.

WiSolar seeks to raise $40 million in debt and equity funding to help facilitate the project slated for the third quarter of 2020. The solution will serve nine provinces in South Africa and several parts of Nigeria. These includes:

Nine Provinces in South Africa – Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Limpopo, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Northern Cape.

Nigeria – Lagos, Abuja,  Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Rivers states.

Reports have it that the country will adopt diverse strategies for the areas mapped out for servicing, specifically in Northern Nigeria. This is because WiSolar envisions a Nigeria where prepaid solar is the primary source of electricity. WiSolar plans to eliminate all environmental pollution caused by energy sources.

Their proposed pricing for South Africa is ZAR 0.82 cents per KWh, as against Eskom (South Africa’s electricity utility) pricing currently ZAR 148.07 cents per kWh.
