Google, a global search engine is set to launch Google Station (“fast Wi-Fi for everyone”) — a Google service that allows partners to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots in public places, in South Africa. Google provides its partners with software and hardware support through Google Station.

Google Station is currently present in India, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand, Nigeria, and Brazil with plans to further expand across the world. Cisco also recently partnered with Google in a bid to launch free, high-speed Wi-Fi across 200 locations in Bengaluru, India.

The search engine giant collaborates with network operators, fibre providers, system integrators to offer Google Station Wi-Fi service across the globe. The platform also creates an opportunity for partners to make money by displaying adverts to people who use these hotspots.

The ‘fast Wi-Fi for everyone’ hotspots will be located in popular areas like government buildings, bus stations, and hospitals, Office complexes etc.

According to MyBroadband, Google intends to launch over 100 Google Station Wi-Fi sites in South Africa by September 2019.

Google South Africa spokesperson Mich Atagana stated that they believe in the importance of access in Africa. She said they are looking to expand Google Station to other African countries.
