Engie, a French Multinational electricity company is expanding its off-grid energy services across Africa through the purchase of Mobisol– a foremost provider of decentralized solar solutions, with presence across Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya.

Founded in 2018, ENGIE deals in the energy transition, electricity generation & distribution, natural gas, nuclear, renewable energy and petroleum.

It provides off-grid electrification services in Africa through  Fenix International, its business subsidiary. Fenix International is famous for providing energy and financial services to more than 500,000 customers in Uganda, Zambia, Nigeria, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Mozambique.

Engie also leverages PowerCorner—its mini-grid initiative to provide cheap electricity to rural populations. The mini-grids are powered by battery storage and solar energy.

The mini-grid initiative provides 24/7 energy services to households and local $ public in villages across Tanzania and Zambia. Services are accessed via fintech solutions like mobile money and Pay-As-You-Go services.

Engie intends to grow its customer base and expand its range of affordable energy products across rural and urban areas. To achieve this, they are depending on Fenix’s inclusive home solar power systems and Mobisol’s productive use products. Engie will leverage this purchase to expand its offerings to countries where Mobisol is already operating, thereby increasing its county presence to nine.
