Uber to Launch Uber Bus in Lagos, Nigeria

Popular ride-hailing company Uber has revealed plans to launch Uber Bus, its bus sharing transport system in Lagos, Nigeria this year. First launched in Cairo, Egypt, the company is looking to transform Africa’s transport sector give their competitors a run for their money.

Uber intends to compete against SWVL—Egypt-based foremost bus-sharing startup who plans to break into the Lagos market; Gona, and Opay’s OBus. The company will also be giving Maxng and Gokada two on-demand motorcycle startup in Nigeria, a run for their money.

According to Quartz Africa, Uber’s General Manager for sub-Saharan Africa Alon Lits said he thinks the bus is very much needed and will be a game-changer in the Lagos transport market. Although the project is a longer-term engagement, he said that they will be willing to carry out the project.

Uber will partner with the Lagos Bus Services to carry out the expansion in Lagos. It is a Lagos state-owned company launched in 2019 by President Muhammad Buhari under the Lagos Bus Reform Project (LBRP).

The Lagos Bus Service will roll out 800 Buses across 5 routes in Lagos to help curb the distorted transportation system in Lagos. In essence, commuters will no longer depend on unreliable and unregulated buses. The Lagos Bus Service will have electronic ticketing, trained drivers and attendants as well.
