Ooredoo, the biggest private telecommunication company in Tunisia struck a deal with Nokia to transition to 5G using Nokia’s 5G cloud mobile core project. The partnership will help Ooredoo move its core network to the cloud, meet future customer demands and offer advanced 5G services for IoT, industrial automation in Tunisia.

Nokia will deploy the following solutions for Ooredoo:

  • Nokia AirGile cloud-native core, which includes VoLTE and Packet Core products;
  • Nokia’s engineered Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI) built using Nokia AirFrame cloud infrastructure,
  • Nokia CloudBand cloud management and orchestration stack; and
  • Nokia Nuage Networks’ software-defined networking (SDN).

Nokia’s AirGile cloud-native core will give Ooredoo access to a range of new services to meet its growing data and video demands. Oerodoo will launch new voice services such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over BroadBand (VoBB) using Nokia Cloud IMS.

Oerodoo’s commercial operations in Tunisia began in December 2002. It has an 8.8 million subscriber base and 40% of the market share in the Tunisian telecommunications sector. A decade after launch, it secured a license to deliver 3G and subsequently deployed 4G network and fixed services in Tunisia.

The new partnership with Nokia will aid the introduction of 5G technology, reduce operational cost, boost network responsiveness, escalate data and video demand and provide innovative services to customers.

Nokia’s 5G cloud-native core solution will be deployed to allow rapid scaling in real-time to meet the immediate capacity demands for Ooredoo Tunisia. It includes time-sensitive support for the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), as well as voice services. There will be a significant improvement of phone calls as Ooredoo transitions from 2G/3G to 4G, and eventually 5G.
