See the Winners of the 2019 EQUALS in Tech Awards

The EQUALS in Tech Awards has selected five firms as its 2019 winners. The winners were announced at a gala awards ceremony held in Berlin.

The award is an annual tradition hosted by the Equals Global Partnership. It aims to honor innovative solutions that bridge the gender gap. 

Over 200 organizations from across the globe applied for the award. Applicants with innovative and unique models were chosen for the award.

The EQUALS in Tech Awards was broken into 5 categories viz;

  • Access Award
  • Skills Award
  • Leadership in Tech Award
  • Leadership in SMEs Award
  • Research Award

Dinarak Mobile Money Female Agent-based in Jordan received the Access Award. Dinarak received the award in recognition of its efforts to get women financial included via its network of female agents.

W.TEC (Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre), an NGO that aids women to become tech experts and techpreneur received the Skills award. The firm is based in Nigeria.

SheWorks an American based social impact-focused company that tackles female unemployment received the Leadership in Tech award. The platform helps women with access to online training and find flexible, remote jobs. 

Kumasi Hive a Ghana-based multi-space innovation hub received the Leadership in SMEs award. The company leverages its Bridge the Gap initiative, to train over 1500 women and girls. It has over 60 startups founded by women.

US-based Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media received the research award. The firm received the award based on its ‘Representations of Women STEM Characters in Media’.

 An advisory board selected the five recipients. The board comprised of EQUALS Steering Committee, Ex award winners, and the leaders of the partnership’s four Coalitions — Access, Leadership, Skills, and the EQUALS Research Group.

 The Internet Society, the Swiss Federal Office of Communications, the Government of Germany, and Inmarsat supported the award.
