Facebook has released a number of new resources to assist users in celebrating Ramadan, which will be affected by COVID-19 restrictions around the world once again.
Ramadan is a month-long festival observed by over 2 billion people all over the world. With many people unable to physically gather for the gathering, social app features become much more important in promoting connection and celebration.
To help people celebrate Ramadan, Facebook has released a new guide with 30 ideas for Facebook’s #MonthofGood initiative.
“Last year, our community shared over 20 million “Happy Ramadan” posts and comments on Facebook, and the number of WhatsApp video calls increased dramatically on the first day of Eid. Ramadan remains a time for kindness, compassion, and contemplation, despite the obstacles to getting together in person. People donated twice as much to Ramadan-related fundraisers on Facebook and Instagram in 2020 as they did in 2019.”
Throughout the month, Facebook will work with makers, publishers, and non-profits to highlight those who are having a positive difference on their communities, as well as host new video content and information sessions related to the #MonthofGood theme.
“Basma Khalifa, a British director, will host a video series on Facebook to honor today’s Muslim changemakers and small businesses. In addition, Tahirah Hairston, Teen Vogue’s Director of Fashion and Beauty Features, will host a panel discussion on modesty in Western culture and inclusion in the fashion industry.”
Facebook is now introducing themed stickers, camera effects, and new Messenger and Messenger Kids apps to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Given that one of the main goals of Ramadan is to bring people together, the limitations of COVID-19 make it difficult for many people to participate, which is why it’s critical for social media sites to provide alternate ways to participate while still remaining linked to the larger celebration through posts and stories.
As the vaccine campaign ramps up around the world, hopefully this will be the last year of COVID-19-affected Ramadan celebrations, and next year will usher in a new era of Ramadan celebrations centered on the #MonthofGood theme.
