Companies like Spotify and Netflix will be able to refer customers to their own websites to make payments, allowing them to bypass App Store fees more easily.

The news follows the passing of a law in South Korea that allows developers to choose which payment methods to employ for in-app payments.

Spotify and Netflix used to let users pay for services in-app, but they’ve since ceased doing so for new subscribers due to a disagreement with Apple about the large fee it charges.

The App Store’s guidelines require developers to sell digital services and subscriptions using Apple’s in-app payment system to ensure a safe and seamless user experience,” Apple said, adding that it is allowing the change because developers of reader apps do not offer in-app digital goods and services for purchase.

The upgrade will make it easier for certain developers to avoid Apple’s exorbitant fees. On some purchases made through the company’s platform, commissions might be as high as 30%.
