Sokna, an Egyptian start-up that aims to honor the deceased while also making the burial experience more convenient and less stressful for their loved ones, has raised $1 million in early funding to expand across Egypt.

This round was made possible by a group of strategic angel investors that includes Silicon Valley-based Mentors Fund investors such as SBX Capital and Dr. Khaled AlMutabagani of the ElSewedy Family Capital, along with ACE & Company and Kabnoury Ventures and Hisham Halbouny, Mo El-Bibany, Youssri Helmy, and Mostafa Amin of Hisham Halbouny, Mo El-Bibany, and Youssri Helmy Senior executives from Google, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as other well-known angel investors, are also represented.

“With this new funding and the great set of partners that joined us, we are poised to spread across the country and be able to serve more families during the tough moments of grieving loved ones,” said Ahmed Gaballah, founder and CEO of SOKNA. “As a goal-oriented team, we always keep our ‘why’ at the forefront: to allow people to focus on the farewell instead of the paperwork, and to honor leaving souls and their families by relieving the logistical anguish of those moments.”

More than 2,500 funerals have been performed by SOKNA and its partners in Greater Cairo alone.

So far, the business has inked 20 hospital and corporate collaborations in Greater Cairo, with over 2,500 cases completed, and hopes to grow across other cities after obtaining early capital from prominent regional and international investors.
