A Brazilian court gave Apple a $19 million fine, and it was also ordered to include power chargers with all new iPhones sold there.

Sao Paulo’s state court sided with the plaintiffs in a case brought against Apple by a group representing Brazilian borrowers, consumers, and taxpayers who claimed the corporation engaged in abusive practices by offering its flagship smartphone without a charger.

The court’s ruling stated that it was “clear that, under the justification of a “green initiative,” the defendant imposes on the consumer a requirement to acquire charging adaptors that were previously included with the product.”

Apple has stated that it plans to appeal the verdict.

Apple has previously claimed that the practice was intended to cut carbon emissions.

Apple continues to sell chargers separately despite claims that many users already have access to chargers.

However, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice informed Apple that enabling USB-C functionality in its products will benefit the environment.

Apple claims that by not including chargers with iPhones, 861,000 tonnes of copper, zinc, and tin will be saved.

Apple is required to sell iPhones with chargers and provide chargers to all Brazilians who purchased its products after October 13, 2020, in addition to the fine.
