Colombian renewable energy startup Unergy has secured US $4 million in a pre-Series A funding round to scale development of decentralised “mini-solar farms” aimed at expanding clean-energy access in rural and underserved regions, according to funding disclosures and sector reporting.
The capital raise was backed by a European climate infrastructure investor in its first Latin American deployment and comes with an additional co-investment commitment of about $80 million earmarked for the deployment of roughly 80 mini solar farms across Colombia. The total capital committed to Unergy’s platform now stands near $120 million.
Unergy, founded in 2020, develops and deploys small-scale distributed solar installations, often around 1 MW in capacity, that feed clean electricity into local grids near communities and businesses rather than relying solely on centralised generation units. The model aims to reduce losses from long transmission distances, enhance local energy security and broaden access to renewable power outside major urban centres.
“The investment allows us to multiply the number of mini solar farms in the country and demonstrates confidence in a decentralised generation model Colombia needs,” said Eduardo Ospina, co-founder and chief executive of Unergy. The startup has built a pipeline of projects exceeding 100 MW in planned capacity.
Unergy’s approach emphasises both environmental and socio-economic impacts, with initiatives that include agrivoltaic projects which combine solar generation with agricultural activities, aiming to boost land use efficiency and local employment opportunities.
Colombia’s distributed solar segment has seen rapid growth in recent years, with mini-solar farms rising from just a handful of projects in 2023 to dozens in 2025, underscoring growing momentum for decentralised renewable solutions amid broader energy transition efforts.
The new funding will support Unergy’s expansion of clean energy infrastructure not only in Colombia but also into neighbouring Latin American markets as the company seeks to scale its distributed generation platform and contribute to regional electrification goals.
