We are one day away from the weekend! Here’s a compilation of the Big 5 daily.
We start with World Bank XL’s announcement of the 20 selected startups to participate in the L’Afrique Excelle program. The program aims to connect francophone startups across the continent with mentors and investors., L’Afrique Excelle intends to assist participants raise up to $5-million from investors. 10 startups will eventually be selected to travel to France in May to receive more training and mentoring. In addition, they will also get exposure to investors at the AfroBytes and VivaTech conferences to be held in Paris on May 15th-18th, 2019.
There is also news that, GoDaddy, one of the world’s biggest website hosting provider, has officially launched in South Africa. It offers a “.co.za” domain registrations for just R10 for the first year. A 24/7 customer care with local telephone numbers and online chat options are also available. GoDaddy, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange provides website hosting and design, domain registrations, and other services.
Next on the Big 5, Algebra Ventures and Ezdehar Management invests in Dsquare, MEA’s fastest growing loyalty solutions provider. This investment comes ahead of Dsquares’ launch of its consumer tech product, the Lucky Discount App. partnership with Algebra Ventures will expose Dsquare to innovation and technology and also enable them serve brands and consumers all over Africa and the Middle East.
Moving on, South African Based airline FlySafair has added a feature that will permit its passengers to send their boarding passes to their phones through WhatsApp on completion of their check-in process. This initiative will enable passengers who use third-party booking mode and those whose contact number were incorrect to provide a new number that will receive the boarding pass. This process will also permit multiple sending of boarding passes to different passengers individually via WhatsApp.
Finally, on the Big 5, Vodacom is set to empower 367 unemployed youths with certified diplomas in Information Technology Technical Support- as they prepare for graduation from the Vodacom Youth Academy between March and April this year. Founded in 2012, the academy focuses on developing ICT skills in youths for free. The objective is to train unemployed youths in ICT skills and also groom them into ICT entrepreneurs.
