Technology has been disrupting man’s usual way of life by making it seamless. It has created a new part that man leverages on to live an easy life. Technology is in everything that man does from telecommunications to autonomous vehicles, to smart cities and a host of other things. Through IoT, AI and Machine Learning, amazing innovations in the tech ecosystem are made available for the world.

Prior to the advent of Smart Televisions, we have been conversant with the traditional television set that can only provide information and entertainment through traditional broadcasting media. Smart TV, however is a television set that is integrated with internet and interactive web features which allows users to stream music/videos, browse the internet and also view photos. It basically allows users to do some of the things that they can do on their computer.

Smart TVs were first launched in the early 1980s but it got largely accepted in 2008 and became a trend from then up till now. Chinese holding company, SKYWORTH Digital Holdings Co. Ltd has changed the game by launching a voice-controlled television in Africa. They launched a range of Artificially Intelligent (AI) TVs on the 16th of May 2019, which makes it the first of its kind to launch in South Africa. The AI TV’s include; S9: OLED TV, Q3C: UHD TV, Q20: UHD TV, and the E20: FHD TV and KTV (Karaoke TV).

The new AI TV can be controlled only by the user’s voice. It supports both Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa amongst other smart devices. The user can converse with the television at will. It can adjust the volume and even answer a general question at the user’s command.

According to Jaco Joubert SKYWORTH Key Account Manager, SKYWORTH’s launch of AI TV keeps them one step ahead of innovation technology. He said they were the first to launch Android TV in South Africa and it’s only natural for them to be the first to roll out AI TV in the country.
