The need for digital literacy grows as demand for internet devices increases in Africa. There is a need to sensitize Africans on their digital rights. KALAAN, a digital literacy initiative that will be powered by the Didier Drogba Foundation, aims to bridge this gap.

The Didier Drogba Foundation (FDD); Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA); and the Ministry of National Education, Technical and Vocational Training (MENETFP), have partnered to launch a project to promote digital literacy in Africa. The three bodies came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the project ‘KALAAN’.

Through the MoU, the Didier Drogba Foundation will educate civil society organizations, citizens and development partners on the importance of digital literacy in their everyday activities. The KALAAN initiative will educate target citizens on pressing development issues like citizenship, health, and financial inclusion through digital literacy programs.

The KALAAN initiative, beyond creating awareness on digital literacy in Africa, aims to boost digital literacy of over one million people within a year in Côte d’Ivoire. Then, over 10 million people in the next five years.

The initiative, which will focus more on women and rural communities, will be rolled out through information technology powered by Ivorian company BYTE sarl’s AmBC.

The MoU was signed at the Ministry of Education premises by H.E. Ms. Kandia K. Camara, Minister for National Education, Technical and Vocational Training; Mr. Didier Drogba, President of the Didier Drogba Foundation; Mr. Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary of ADEA.

Other participants present were Mr. Yaya Toure, Manager of BYTE sarl; many senior officials of the ministry, representatives of ADEA, FDD, and the media.
