The Government of Morocco has initiated plans to automate traffic systems in a bid to cut road accidents by 25% in 2021. The Minister of Public, Works, and Transportation, Abdelkader Amara opened room for the acquisition, maintenance, and installation of over 500 devices for detecting traffic violations.

About 276-speed control devices, 204 monitoring devices, and 72 highway speed monitor devices will be needed for the project. The tech devices are AI-enabled to detect speed limits and multiple traffic violations cases. The device will be installed on road networks to measure every motorist’s average speed.

Three companies are already bidding for the project.  Moroccan Al Omra Group, German Vitronic, and Vitronic Middle East are the three in line for the national contract. German Vitronic was chosen for its worldwide credibility and the reliability of the PoLISCAN OFFICE PRO software. The software processes data from thousands of checkpoints simultaneously. Vitronic German will be in charge of deploying laser-powered systems within 12 metropolises of Morocco, back end software for data processing, as well as equipment for staff working at service locations in the countries. They will execute the content alongside Alomra Group International.

Morocco’s national safety strategy will help curb traffic menace in the country. Last year alone, there was a 7.5% increase in road accidents and 66,343 reported cases. In February 2019, the Ministry of Transport distributed 280 intelligence radars to the security officers. The radar is currently used to catch drivers not buckled in, talking and driving, and those causing traffic. The new project will be completed in the next two years.
