Nokia Bell Labs and AMBER– an international research center, has announced the creation of a new battery design for 5G enabled devices. The new design boosts the strength of batteries 2.5 times more than its usual strength and it will help power, all 5G enabled devices.

The world is gradually transitioning into the 5G era. An era that will host new generations of Internet of Things from wearable technologies to industrial robots and pervasive sensors. These devices will require greater battery performance. Nokia Bell Labs and Amber intend to meet this demand through their new battery design. The new technology will suffice where conventional power may not be available.

A recent study by Wood Mackenzie revealed that energy storage in 100% renewable systems will be 25 times higher than today’s systems. The study further elaborated that this discovery will create a need for efficient, fast charging, and compact energy storage.

Nokia and Amber’s new battery design, however, has the capacity to meet this need. Considering that the battery is powered by renewable energy, which is designed to manage high fluctuation in energy generation and improve the performance of large-scale energy grids.

Paul King, a member of the Technical Staff, Nokia Bell Labs and a lead investigator in the project, said that the partnership between Nokia Bell Labs and Amber Research on the project gave them leverage over an ‘extremely difficult problem’. He said that by storing more energy into a smaller space, the new design will have an impact on 5G and the entire network ecosystem.

The two companies have filed a patent for the protection of this new technology, before making it available in the market. They both published an international science journal ‘Nature Energy’ that focused on battery research.
