Nvidia Corp. has acquired SchedMD LLC, the U.S. software developer best known for creating the open-source Slurm workload management system widely used in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) clusters, the company announced. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
SchedMD, founded in 2010 to develop and support Slurm, provides tools that orchestrate how large computing jobs are scheduled and run across clusters of servers and GPUs infrastructure critical for training and deploying advanced AI models. Slurm is deployed on more than half of the top 10 and top 100 supercomputers globally and serves research institutions, cloud providers, enterprises and government labs.
In a corporate blog post, Nvidia said it will continue to distribute and develop Slurm as open-source, vendor-neutral software, ensuring broad availability and support across diverse hardware and software environments. The company highlighted that the acquisition aligns with its long-term strategy to deepen investments in open-source technology and AI infrastructure software as demand for scalable computing grows.
SchedMD’s CEO, Danny Auble, described the acquisition as a validation of Slurm’s central role in demanding HPC and AI systems, while Nvidia’s announcement underscored the firm’s intention to accelerate Slurm’s development and integration with its accelerated computing platforms.
Industry analysts said the move bolsters Nvidia’s influence up the AI stack by combining its leading GPU hardware and software tools with a core piece of open-source cluster orchestration technology, potentially simplifying large-scale AI workflows and strengthening the overall ecosystem for developers, researchers and enterprises.
The acquisition follows Nvidia’s broader efforts to expand its open-source offerings, including the recent release of new open-source AI models, and reflects intensifying competition in the global AI software and infrastructure landscape.
