The Ethiopian Ministry of Health has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development USAID to launch a Digital Health Project in Ethiopia. The health project is worth $63million and will help in combating health challenges in Ethiopia.

Health challenges in Ethiopia have traversed for a while now. The country has witnessed the spread of diverse diseases including communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrhoea.

The growth in the country’s population also increased the spread rate of diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, hepatitis B&C and high blood pressure. Mental health and eye problems are also rampant. The need to combat these diseases and build a healthy environment for its citizens spurred the partnership.

The digital health project will create a modernized health information system that makes use of predictive technology, statistics, and data to improve Ethiopian’s health conditions.

The project will also train health and extension workers, health policymakers and medical personnel on the effective usage of technology. It will also provide modernize instruction on how to better serve patients and families across the country.

USAID will further capitalize on the partnership to introduce new courses to Ethiopian Universities. These courses will help to develop health competencies, innovations, and tech-solution in Ethiopians youth.

Prior to the recent Digital Health Projects, the United States had supported Ethiopia with $150 million to combat diverse health issues in the country. This makes the United States the largest bilateral provider of support to Ethiopia’s health sector.
