Many journalists have troubles reporting the news without plagiarism. Google reported that a recent survey from the International Center for Journalists, 77% of newsrooms across the region are concerned about their ability to create quality content. This is what prompted the establishment of the Google News Initiative last year, to strengthen journalism through technological innovations. Google set aside $300 million to support journalism projects over the next three years.

The Head of Google News Initiative Innovation, Ludovic Blecher, expressed concern about how journalists no longer focus on breaking news. He mentioned that instead of spending time and data to retell news, journalists could automate the repetitive parts of news, to produce better contents.

The Google News Initiative’s Innovative Challenge will hold this year in North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia-Pacific.

“We’re excited to deliver the GNI Challenge to the Middle East and Africa. We want to ensure that all news organizations, large and small, legacy publishers as well as news startups, have the opportunity to inject new ideas into the local and regional news industry.” – Ludovic Blecher, Head of Google News Initiative.
