Big News! As part of the Moving Rwanda Initiative, Volkswagen and Siemens collaborated to launch an Electric Car Mobility Project in Rwanda. This will allow Volkswagen to provide four e-Golfs and one charging station for the initial phase of the pilot project, while Siemens will provide the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Awesome!
Guess what? In a bid to combat crimes in Durban South Africa, Microsoft has partnered with the eThekwini Durban Metro Police to provide Hi-tech Patrol vehicles in the state. The vehicle has dashboard cameras that can analyze the vehicle owners’ data through an automatic number plate recognition system.
Next on the Big 5, popular browsing platform Opera has announced the launch of OLeads to scale over 40 million SMEs in Nigeria. OLeads is an online lead generation platform that small and medium-sized businesses can leverage for online visibility. Interesting!
Also, research by Afrilabs and Briter Bridges revealed that the Africa Ecosystem saw the birth of 643 tech hubs during the third quarter of 2019. According to the report, the hubs grew from 314 in 2016 to 442 in 2018 and concurrently increased to 618 in the first quarter of 2019. Applaudable!
Finally, Tunisia’s biggest telco Ooredoo has struck a deal with Nokia to transition to 5G tech using Nokia’s 5G cloud mobile core project. Ooredoo will leverage the deal to move its core network to the cloud, meet future customer demands and offer advanced 5G services for IoT, industrial automation in Tunisia.
