TaskMate, a crowdsourcing tool developed by Google, is now available in Kenya, allowing users to use their smartphones to complete tasks and earn money in the emerging new economy.

Users of the TaskMate mobile app perform skilled and unskilled work for businesses that have been allowed by Google to post on the platform, such as translation or photography.

“Today we released TaskMate, and it’s the first time we’ve done it in Africa and around the world,” said Mike Knapp, product manager for TaskMate.

“We had 1,000 users utilize the app in a pilot period, and they gave us really great feedback.” As a result, we’ve progressed to the beta stage. “At this stage, we’re truly experimenting on a larger scale,” Knapp added.

“We’re also looking for businesses and startups to come and experiment with us on the platform to see if this can help them solve the difficult problems they’re working on,” Knapp added.

“This is a crowdsourcing platform for businesses and organizations that facilitates the allocation and completion of work from businesses.” It’s also an app that gives Kenyans opportunities, whether it’s for community building or extra revenue. In its digital transformation journey, Google is committed to building for and with Africa,” he stated.

The test began late last year in Kenya, and users were allowed to complete a variety of activities, including snapping images of flora for a Penn State University research project.

Even in India, where it’s still being tested in the pilot stage, the app is readily available.
