The instant messaging app, Telegram which is based in Dubai and was launched in late 2013, has been downloaded over 1 billion times globally, according to Sensor Tower.
It’s important to note that the number of downloads does not correspond to the app’s active userbase. Telegram, for example, had approximately 500 million monthly active users as of early this year.
However, the significant growth in downloads, which also might have something to do with WhatsApp’s mishandling of conveying its privacy policies to its vast userbase, implies that Telegram has received some sort of attention.
Telegram, which raised over $1 billion earlier this year, is the fifteenth app in the world to have been downloaded one billion times or more. According to Sensor Tower, other apps on the list include WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify, and Netflix.
