Orange is installing creative solar systems and the next generation batteries with energy partners in some of its subsidiaries.
To reduce its environmental impact, the Group is positioning itself as the largest solar panel installer in these countries, with a renewable energy use rate of over 50% in Orange Guinea, 41% in Orange Madagascar, and 40% in Orange Sierra Leone.
Orange is putting in place many measures, such as solar panels, to stop using fuel-powered generators (which emit CO2).
These solar panel systems will eventually be installed in other African and Middle Eastern countries where Orange has a presence, such as Liberia, where solar panels are installed on 75 percent of Orange’s telecom sites.
Orange has installed solar panels at 5,400 of its telecom sites (some fully solar, others hybrid), saving 55 million liters of fuel each year.
In Jordan, Orange has also unveiled three solar farms to further minimize its carbon footprint by switching to clean and renewable energy.
These solar farm ventures will provided more than 65 percent of Orange Jordan’s energy needs in 2020.
Thanks to this solar infrastructure, the company has been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 45 kilotons since 2018.
“We are proud to be the first company by number of solar panels in five countries in Africa and the Middle East,” says Alioune Ndiaye, CEO of Orange Middle East and Africa. Orange has set the goal of meeting 50% of the Group’s electricity needs from renewable sources by 2025 as part of its Engage 2025 strategic plan as a stakeholder in the energy transition. By 2040, we want to be carbon-neutral.”
As of March 31, 2021, Orange has about 130 million customers in 18 African and Middle Eastern countries. Orange MEA is the Group’s key growth market, with a turnover of €5.8 billion in 2020.
Orange Money is a mobile-based money transfer and financial services company with 50 million customers in 17 countries.
Orange, a multi-service provider and digital transformation benchmark partner, contributes its expertise to the growth of new digital technologies in Africa and the Middle East.
