OpenAI has entered into a seven‑year contract worth approximately US$38 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide the artificial‑intelligence firm with large‑scale cloud infrastructure and access to hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs.

The agreement arrives shortly after OpenAI completed a corporate restructuring that ended Microsoft’s exclusive right‑of‑first‑refusal on supplying compute services, thereby enabling OpenAI to diversify its cloud‑provider base.

Under the deal, OpenAI will begin utilising AWS infrastructure immediately, with full deployment of the contracted capacity targeted by the end of 2026 and further expansion into 2027.

AWS is expected to provide OpenAI with “hundreds of thousands” of Nvidia GPUs, as well as tens of millions of CPUs across its EC2 UltraServer clusters aimed at supporting both the training and inference of advanced AI models.

For AWS, the deal serves as a significant endorsement of its cloud‑compute capabilities amid competition from rival providers. Shares in Amazon rose approximately 4–5 % following the announcement.

OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman described the partnership as strengthening “the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”

Industry analysts view the move as pivotal in reshaping the AI‑infrastructure landscape, marking a departure from the former model in which OpenAI relied almost entirely on Microsoft’s Azure as its primary cloud provider. The shift reflects OpenAI’s push toward operational autonomy and multi‑provider resilience.
