Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has officially commenced sales in Argentina, marking a significant milestone in its South American expansion strategy. The launch event, held on October 8, 2025, in Buenos Aires, introduced three models to the Argentine market: the Yuan Pro electric SUV, the Song Pro plug-in hybrid SUV, and the Dolphin Mini electric car. These vehicles are priced under $16,000 before taxes and fees, positioning them as affordable options for Argentine consumers.
This move leverages Argentina’s recent policy changes, notably Decree 49/25, which allows the import of up to 50,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually without tariffs, provided they are valued under $16,000. BYD has secured an allocation to import approximately 7,800 vehicles under this scheme.
The Argentine automotive market, traditionally dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles, has seen limited EV adoption, with only 486 electric vehicles sold in the first eight months of 2025 out of a total of 421,000 vehicles. However, recent tariff reductions and improved credit availability have led to a 60.4% increase in car registrations, signaling a growing openness to EVs.
BYD’s entry into Argentina follows its recent expansion into Brazil, where it began local passenger vehicle production in July 2025. The company has also been authorized to establish a local manufacturing presence in Argentina through its subsidiary, BYD Auto Argentina S.A.U., which will handle vehicle assembly, battery production, and maintenance services.
The launch event was livestreamed on YouTube and featured presentations by Audrey Li, BYD’s Vice President and Regional Managing Director for Latin America. Attendees experienced test drives and demonstrations of BYD’s intelligent cabin technology and smartphone integration features.
As BYD continues to expand its footprint in South America, its entry into Argentina represents a strategic move to tap into the region’s growing demand for affordable and sustainable transportation solutions.
