French energy company Engie has fully commissioned the 650 megawatt Red Sea Wind Energy project on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, establishing the largest operational wind farm in both Africa and the Middle East. Commissioning was completed in June, four months ahead of the original schedule, delivering clean energy to more than one million households.

The project was delivered in phases: the first 306 megawatts began operating in December 2024, followed by an additional 194 megawatts in April 2025, and the final 150 megawatts came online by June. The timely delivery reflects strong collaboration between Engie and partners Orascom Construction, Toyota Tsusho and Eurus Energy, all part of the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium.

The wind farm is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.3 million tonnes annually while helping Egypt meet its renewable energy goal of 42 percent of electricity generation by 2030. The entire capacity is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, offering long-term revenue stability .

Safety and execution were notable: more than seven million man-hours were completed without a single lost-time injury. The project was financed through a consortium of international institutions including Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Norinchukin Bank, Société Générale under NEXI cover, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

ENGIE now operates nearly 1 gigawatt of wind energy capacity in Egypt, solidifying its leadership in the renewable energy sector across the region. A follow-up project expected to exceed 900 megawatts is already under development near the same site.

The milestone marks a major advance in Egypt’s energy transition and demonstrates the potential for clean power infrastructure to address both electricity demand and climate challenges.
