Boomplay and Universal Music Group (UMG) have announced a new landmark licensing agreement that will extend UMG’s global music catalog licensing from 7 to 47 countries across Africa, as part of a long-term partnership that will support African artists and talent while also expanding Boomplay users’ listening options.

UMG became the first major global music group to license music to the service in 2018, and it has since grown its audience scope and impact across Africa.

With the extension and expansion of this licensing agreement with UMG, African music lovers around the continent will be able to hear the best of both domestic and international talent.

Boomplay reached the 100 million app downloads mark on Google Play in December 2020.

UMG’s continued commitment to supporting and growing Africa’s domestic music communities is reflected in this agreement, which also provides new avenues for Pan-African talent to reach new markets locally, regionally, and globally.

Along with UMG’s long-standing operations in South Africa, UMG has taken a holistic approach to expanding operations across the continent, opening new divisions in Nigeria and becoming the first major music company to create divisions in Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Cameroon, and Morocco.

This presence will continue to expand throughout 2021 and beyond, as UMG expands its ability to support domestic artists on the ground in Africa and around the world.
