The African Export-Import Bank’s Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) initiative, which aims to help Africa’s creative and cultural industries, has announced a series of virtual forums in the run-up to the Intra-African Trade Fair 2021, which will take place in Kigali, Rwanda from December 8 to 14, 2021, with the next event focusing on intellectual property.

Under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, most African states have Intellectual Property laws in effect, which are important tools for safeguarding creativity and innovation as well as fueling the development of copyright-based industries.

The administration and implementation of Intellectual Property laws, as well as the Intellectual Property of their operation at the regional and continental levels, remain crucial if Intellectual property are to develop into an asset class that can be monetised on the continent.

Access to Intellectual Property information, legal support, and compliance is another critical component for independent creatives and SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises).

Smaller creative businesses and individuals are often unaware of their legal rights and the tools available to help them secure those rights.

These topics will be discussed at a special CANEX virtual event on Monday, April 26 to commemorate World IP Day 2021, which is themed “IP & SMEs – Taking your Ideas to Market.”

This high-level discussion would be of interest to all working creatives interested in understanding and protecting their IP rights, as well as those working in the legal, policy, and implementation sectors of intellectual property practice, and financial institutions interested in financing the CCI market.
