Finnfund, Finland’s development financier, has committed a $4 million debt investment to Poa Internet Kenya Ltd., a Kenyan internet service provider. This funding aims to enhance Poa Internet’s network, enabling the expansion of affordable broadband access to underserved communities across Kenya. The initiative is supported by the European Union and the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+), under the EU’s Global Gateway program.
Poa Internet, founded in 2015, has established itself as a key player in providing low-cost internet services to low and middle-income neighborhoods in Kenya. The company offers unlimited home internet plans starting at KES 1,575 per month, significantly lower than traditional providers. With over 238,000 subscribers, Poa Internet is among Kenya’s largest internet service providers.
The investment will facilitate the expansion of Poa Internet’s fiber network, leveraging Nokia’s technology to enhance infrastructure and service delivery. Finnfund’s support underscores its commitment to fostering digital inclusion and economic growth across the continent.
This partnership aligns with Kenya’s broader efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive access to digital services. By improving internet connectivity in underserved areas, the initiative aims to provide opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic development.
