MazaoHub, a Tanzanian agritech startup, has raised $2 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round to expand its AI-powered, climate-smart farming solutions across Africa.
Founded in 2021, MazaoHub combines artificial intelligence with on-the-ground agronomy support to assist smallholder farmers. Its hybrid model, termed “Tech and Touch,” integrates AI-driven soil intelligence with in-person guidance from agronomists through its Farmer Excellence Centres. This approach aims to enhance productivity while promoting sustainable farming practices.
The $2 million funding comprises $1.5 million in equity led by Catalyst Fund, with participation from Nordic Impact Fund, Mercy Corps Ventures, elea Foundation, Impacc, and DOB Equity. Additionally, $500,000 in non-dilutive capital was secured from the Livelihood Impact Fund. These investments underscore a growing interest in blended finance models that address both climate adaptation and food security challenges in Africa.
MazaoHub’s solutions have enabled farmers to reduce fertilizer use by up to 30%, increase the adoption of organic manure fivefold, and optimize irrigation practices. These outcomes contribute to enhanced yields, lower emissions, and improved water conservation. The company’s platform also facilitates direct market access, ensuring traceability and better pricing for farmers.
The new funding will support the production of low-cost soil kits and sensors, the expansion of Farmer Excellence Centres, and the acceleration of the rollout of CropSupply.com, MazaoHub’s direct-to-market platform. These initiatives aim to scale the company’s impact and support over 500,000 farmers across Tanzania.
MazaoHub’s innovative approach positions it as a leader in Africa’s agritech sector, demonstrating how technology and local expertise can drive sustainable agricultural practices.
