Zero Carbon Charge, a pioneering South African startup specializing in off-grid, solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, has secured a R100 million (approximately US$5.6 million) equity investment from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).
The funding will facilitate the establishment of a nationwide network of ultra-fast charging stations, strategically positioned every 150 kilometers along major national roads. Each site will operate entirely off-grid, harnessing solar energy complemented by battery storage systems. This approach aims to alleviate reliance on the national power grid, Eskom, and address range anxiety among EV drivers.
Beyond enhancing EV infrastructure, Zero Carbon Charge’s model offers tangible benefits to rural communities:
-
Landowner Partnerships: Landowners hosting charging stations will receive 5% of annual electricity revenue, providing a stable income stream.
-
Local Economic Boost: Each site supports job creation and stimulates economic activity in underserved regions.
DBSA’s investment underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive economic development across Southern Africa.
Lebogang Seperepere, Acting Group Executive for Project Preparation at DBSA, emphasized:
“We are happy to have invested R100 million in support of Zero Carbon Charge’s off-grid EV charging, which will not only assist in growing the EV market in South Africa but also create jobs, support the economy, and mitigate climate change.”
Joubert Roux, Founder of Zero Carbon Charge, expressed gratitude:
“I commend the DBSA for its unwavering professionalism and commitment throughout the due diligence process. We are honoured by their support and determined to deliver.”
Founded in 2023, Zero Carbon Charge aims to revolutionize South Africa’s transportation landscape by providing accessible, renewable energy solutions for electric vehicles. The company’s off-grid charging stations are designed to operate independently of the national grid, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy supply for EV users
