The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has formally launched the United Arab Emirates’ national 6G initiative, signalling a strategic push into next-generation telecom systems beyond 5G.
Inaugurated at a first meeting of the newly formed 6G Committee, the initiative brings together federal and local government bodies, telecom operators, academic and research institutions, and global technology providers.
TDRA’s Deputy Director General for the Telecommunications Sector, Eng. Mohammed Al Ramsi, stated the effort builds on the UAE’s 5G deployment covering over 99.5% of populated areas and more than 23,000 sites and will chart a national roadmap for 6G connectivity.
The committee’s objectives include developing a 6G ecosystem domestically by strengthening collaboration among national stakeholders; launching research and innovation programmes via universities and R&D centres; accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, satellite networks and quantum computing; and contributing to global 6G standards and spectrum regulation.
Two specialised working groups have been established under the committee. One, chaired by Dr Marwan Dabbah of Khalifa University, will focus on research and development, while the other, led by Dr Khaled Al Awadhi of TDRA, will oversee integration and strategic partnerships.
Commenting on the milestone, Dr Al Awadhi said the initiative reflects TDRA’s proactive stance on shaping the communications future and on positioning the UAE as a global hub for advanced telecom innovation.
Industry observers note the launch comes shortly after the UAE completed a breakthrough 6G Terahertz pilot in partnership with New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU AD) and operator e& UAE, achieving a record throughput of 145 Gbps, underscoring momentum for the post-5G era.
The launch of the national 6G initiative positions the UAE to influence both domestic and international telecom ecosystems, expand its industrial and knowledge-economy base, and prepare infrastructure and regulation for expansive connectivity uses across sectors such as autonomous mobility, smart cities, high-capacity IoT, and immersive digital twins.
