Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) listed 5 African countries on its global ranking of nations with most women entrepreneurs. Uganda had the highest number of women entrepreneurs globally, followed by Ghana at number two. Botswana, Malawi and Angola were also listed as 3rd, 7th and 9th respectively.
MIWE annually provides insights into the progress and achievements of women in business. Necessity-driven entrepreneurial activities in the African countries led to a surge in female entrepreneurs in Africa. This is why these countries had more women leading businesses.

Conditions for women to advance as entrepreneurs and tech leaders are considerably less enabling in developing markets. Despite challenges such as social, financial barriers and biased economic systems, women in Africa owe businesses.
MIWE studied women entrepreneurs in 58 countries across the globe. It reports that besides Uganda, women account for 4 out of every 10 business owners in Ghana. This shows that women in Sub-Saharan markets are determined to start their own business, irrespective of social status. This shows a willingness to contribute positively to society, with or without barriers.
The same holds true for women in tech. Women either lead startups or hold major positions in these countries. In general, women in entrepreneurial ecosystems thrive and successfully compete with their male counterparts.
