Champions of Science Africa Innovation 2.0 Opens Door to Applications

Yesterday, on the 8th of November, 2018. Johnson & Johnson launched its Champions of Science Africa Innovation Challenge 2.0. An initiative that aims to identify scalable and plausible solutions to six major problems the African Population is facing as regards health and the environment. It aims to address the area of Botanical Solutions, Packaging Innovations, Mental Health, Health Worker Support, Digital health Tools and Essential Surgical care.

The Champions of Science Africa Innovation Challenge urges individuals with scalable and creative ideas to submit with their ideas clearly outlined and also, a one-year projection of their innovation. The winner will receive over $50,000 in funding and mentorship.

In a statement Josh Ghaim, Ph.D., the Chief Technology Officer of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc gave, he said “The growing number of innovation hubs throughout Africa is sparking a new generation of entrepreneurs who are innovating and finding new solutions for issues facing their communities,”. Josh Ghaim also talked about their initiative’s goal to increase the support for entrepreneurs in the region in a bid to provide needed solution to the urgent needs present.

“The Africa Innovation Challenge provides an important platform to support emerging entrepreneurs and help accelerate the development of unique, sustainable health care and environmental solutions.”

The submitted will be judged and selected based on the following criteria:

  1.       The Idea must address at least one of the six categories mentioned above.
  2.       The idea must scale the test of innovation and creativity
  3.       The idea must also be scalable
  4.       Your submission must clearly draw out a plan outlining how inning the award would assist in reaching a milestone within a single year and also outlining a commercialization plan.

Thierry Zomahoun, the President and CEO of African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) who is also the Founder and Chairman for the Next Einstein expressed his excitement for the initiative. “We are thrilled to be collaborating once again on the Africa Innovation Challenge.

Zomahoun continued “Earlier this year, at our biennial Next Einstein Forum event, we had the pleasure of hearing from the first challenge winners. The incredible success of their businesses provides wonderful examples of leadership and entrepreneurialism and is a testament to the amazing young talent across Africa. We look forward to the winners of Africa Innovation Challenge 2.0.”
