Huawei and MTN have run the first trial of Huawei’s 5G C-Band spectrum using MTN’s platform. The trial was conducted at the ongoing AfricaCom Awards in Cape Town, South Africa.
The stride to introduce the 5G C-Band spectrum in Africa has been on for a while with Telco’s like Vodacom, RAIN, and Huawei taking the lead. RAIN was the first to test 5G network in SA earlier in September but Huawei has now joined suite.
The trial phase of 5G C-Band also dubbed ‘Golden Band’ ran on a 3.3-3.8GHz spectrum with a speed of 1.6GPS during the live test.

The conference also saw the signing of a new partnership agreement between Huawei and MTN. With the test, both companies will work together to establish a joint 5G innovation programme to scale the technology in Africa. This will scale the development of artificial intelligence, smart cities and tech-education in Africa.
The Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) MTN, Giovanni Chiarelli lauded the trial phase. He noted that this portrays the power of technology to users and signifies the next generation for consumers and enterprises.
The Business Vice President of Huawei Carrier, Dean Yu also noted that 5G technology is at its peak of deployment in 2019. The launch of 5G will give birth to more ‘Cloud Native’ services and create smart clients, broad pipes and cloud applications for African.
